Communication and Language (the big one!)
The development of children’s spoken language underpins all seven areas of learning and development. Children’s back-and-forth interactions from an early age form the foundations for language and cognitive development. The number and quality of the conversations they have with adults and peers throughout the day in a language-rich environment is crucial. That’s why you won’t find us glued to a screen. We read frequently to children, talk to and sing with them, and engage with them in meaningful play; filling their world with rich language.
Did you know that there is a 30 million word gap between children in disadvantaged communities and their peers? We’re on a mission to not let Tudhoe Moor Nursery School feed into this statistic. Communication between children and staff, and children and their peers is crucial. It’s a good job our staff love to chat! They read to your child, play in our home corner, comment on your child’s play, extend your child’s sentences, teach them specific vocabulary and develop happy little talkers. If we felt that your child needed more support, it could be that we seek further support from children’s speech and language.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (developing happy, sociable and independent children)
This is crucial for children to lead healthy and happy lives, and is fundamental to their cognitive development. Our staff are warm and supportive and form strong relationships with your child to help them learn how to understand their own feelings and those of others. We’re here for your child to have a cuddle when they need it, learn from their mistakes, learn how to navigate falling out with their friends and how to make it better. We help explain what their different feelings mean- that it’s ok to feel angry or sad and teach them how to recognise it and what could help make it better. Toilet training can be a big step and we’re here to help. Our toilet training champion Miss Franklin will guide you through the stages and help with any questions you might have.
Physical Development (all movements big and small)
Physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. Fine motor control helps with later Literacy skills such as holding a pencil and being able to write letters. We have lots of lovely activities to help with this such as painting, writing, drawing pictures, using chalks, threading objects and games. Gross motor skills include balance, spatial awareness, building core strength and co-ordination. We have apparatus that we use in the hall to build obstacle courses, as well as bikes, scooters and trikes outside. A-frames help children to climb and balance. If we felt that your child needed more help in these areas, it could be that we seek further support from children’s physiotherapy.
